Overview

The Batticaloa Lighthouse is a graceful white tower standing near the estuary where the lagoon meets the sea at Palameenmadu. At about 28 m tall, it is a landmark of the city's coast, and the surrounding point offers sweeping views over the estuary, the lagoon and passing fishing boats. It is a quiet, breezy spot popular for sunset and photographs.

History

The lighthouse was built in 1913 during the British colonial period to guide vessels along the east coast and into the Batticaloa lagoon estuary, and it remains an operational navigational light.
