Overview

Parey Dewa, meaning 'rock in water', is a serene little Buddhist temple perched on a rocky island a short distance off the shore beside Matara Fort. A slender cable-stayed footbridge crosses the surf to the islet, where a white stupa, shrine and Bodhi tree sit amid crashing waves and sea spray. It is a peaceful, atmospheric spot with fine coastal views, especially at sunset, and a favourite short stop for visitors to the old town.

History

A temple has long stood on the islet, but the present shrine is relatively modern; the graceful pedestrian bridge linking it to the mainland was built in 2008, replacing an earlier crossing and making the island easily accessible to pilgrims and visitors.
