Overview

Lake Gregory sits at the heart of Nuwara Eliya, bordered by a well-kept recreational park with walking paths, lawns and open spaces. Visitors take pedal boats, speedboat rides and swan boats on the water, hire bicycles or take pony rides along the shore. It is a relaxed spot for a stroll, best enjoyed in the crisp light of morning or late afternoon.

History

The lake was created in 1873 under British Governor Sir William Gregory, who authorised damming of the Thalagala stream that flows from Mount Pidurutalagala to reclaim a swampy bog. In 1881 it was stocked with trout, and from 1913 its waters were channelled to a hydro power station that still supplies the town.
