Elkaduwa

Elkaduwa

A cool highland village east of Matale, gateway to the emerald Sembuwatta Lake and the misty Riverston edge of the Knuckles Range.

Overview

Elkaduwa is a tea- and pine-clad village in the hills east of Matale, at the foot of the Knuckles Mountain Range. It is the base for two of the district's most scenic spots: the strikingly clear Sembuwatta Lake set among pine forest, and the dramatic Riverston grasslands and viewpoints on the western edge of the Knuckles massif. The air is noticeably cooler here and the landscape shifts from spice gardens to rolling montane grassland and waterfalls.

History

The area was opened up under British planters, and the pine plantations and Elkaduwa tea estate around Sembuwatta date from that era. The surrounding Knuckles Conservation Forest was inscribed in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rare montane biodiversity.
