Two coasts, one endless surf season

Surf peeling right-handers at Arugam Bay all summer, then chase the winter swell to Weligama and the south-coast reefs — Sri Lanka's two coastlines mean warm water and waves twelve months a year.

Sri Lanka runs on a two-coast surf calendar. From May to September the east coast fires: Arugam Bay's Main Point is the island's most famous wave, a long sand-bottomed right, with Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm nearby for mellower days. From November to April the action flips to the south-west, where Weligama's huge sandy bay is one of the best places anywhere to learn, and the reefs around Midigama — Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Rams — serve everyone up to advanced.

The water sits at 27–29°C year-round, so it is boardshorts and a rash vest, never a wetsuit, and the infrastructure is superb: surf camps with coaching and yoga, board hire from $5 a day and ding-repair shops steps from the sand. Beginners should stick to sandy beach breaks and flagged areas; several reefs run shallow at low tide, so ask locally before paddling out.

Die besten Surfspots in Sri Lanka

Warm water year-round, mellow points, and two coastlines on opposite monsoon schedules make Sri Lanka one of the world's friendliest surf destinations. From roughly November to April the south coast fires: Weligama's sandy bay is arguably the best place anywhere to learn, while Midigama, Kabalana, and Hiriketiya serve up progressively punchier reef and point waves. From May to September the swell window shifts east to Arugam Bay, whose long right-hand point at Main Point is the island's most famous wave, flanked by beginner-friendly peaks at Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm. Boards, schools, and surf camps are cheap and everywhere.

Die 10 besten Strände in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's beaches split neatly across two seasons. From December to April the south and west coasts shine: golden crescents like Mirissa and Unawatuna, the long resort sands of Bentota, and the quiet coves around Tangalle enjoy calm seas and blue skies. From May to September the action flips to the east, where Nilaveli's powder-white sand, Pasikuda's shallow reef-sheltered bay, and Arugam Bay's surf come into their own. Whichever month you travel, roughly half the island's coastline is in season, so pick your beach by the calendar and you will rarely be disappointed.

Die 10 besten Abenteueraktivitäten in Sri Lanka

For a small island, Sri Lanka packs in a remarkable spread of adventure: world-class surf breaks on two coasts, white-water rafting through rainforest gorges, sunrise pilgrimages up sacred peaks and blue-whale encounters a short boat ride offshore. Distances are short, so you can zipline over tea country one morning and snorkel a coral island the next. The east coast (Arugam Bay, Pigeon Island) peaks May to September, while the south and the highlands are at their best December to April.

Wellness in Sri Lanka: 10 Ayurveda-, Yoga- und Spa-Erlebnisse

Sri Lanka is one of the world's original wellness destinations — Ayurveda has been practised here for over 3,000 years, and the island now pairs traditional treatment centres with jungle yoga retreats, hot springs and serious spa hotels. A classic Ayurveda stay runs 7 to 21 days with a resident doctor, daily treatments and a tailored diet, but plenty of places welcome day guests for a massage or a single consultation. The south-west coast has the biggest cluster of resorts; the hills add cool-climate retreats and meditation centres.

Gute Fragen

When is the best time to surf in Sri Lanka?

It depends on the coast: Arugam Bay and the east work from May to September, while Weligama, Midigama and the south-west break from November to April. Because the seasons alternate, there is good surf somewhere on the island in every month of the year.

Is Sri Lanka good for beginner surfers?

It is one of the best places in the world to learn. Weligama's long, sandy, waist-deep bay produces gentle whitewater for hundreds of metres, water is bath-warm year-round, and group lessons cost just $15–25. Arugam Bay's mellower points suit improvers in summer.

Do I need to bring my own surfboard to Sri Lanka?

No — every surf town rents decent boards from about $5–10 a day, and surf camps include them. Intermediate and advanced surfers who are particular about equipment may still prefer their own shortboard; airlines flying into Colombo generally carry boards for a modest fee.
