Nine Arch Bridge
An iconic curved stone railway viaduct set amid jungle and tea, famous for photos of the train crossing its nine arches.
A laid-back hill-country town wrapped in tea plantations, waterfalls and misty gap views, and the region's most popular traveller base.
Ella sits at around 1,040 m in the Badulla District of Uva Province and has grown from a sleepy railway village into Sri Lanka's most beloved hill-country hub. Its single main street is lined with cafes and guesthouses, while short walks lead out to the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and the dramatic Ella Gap, which frames a view all the way to the southern plains on a clear day. The cool climate, easy hikes and famously scenic train line make it a natural stop between the highlands and the south coast.
Ella developed around the hill-country railway line completed by the British in the early 20th century to carry tea down from the Uva plantations. The surrounding area is steeped in the Ramayana legend, with several nearby sites said to be linked to the demon king Ravana who, according to the epic, held the princess Sita captive in this region.
