Sri Lanka Beach Holiday Tour
A week of golden crescents: whales at Mirissa, snorkelling at Unawatuna and sunsets on Galle Fort's walls.
Sri Lanka's south coast is one long necklace of beaches, each with its own character, strung along a single coastal road with a 17th-century fort city in the middle. This seven-day beach holiday works the best of that shore at the gentlest possible pace — two bases, no early alarms except one very worthwhile boat, and the option to do absolutely nothing executed to a high standard.
The first base is Mirissa, the whale coast: a palm-fringed crescent with surf schools at one end, sundowner bars at the other, and blue whales feeding offshore from November to April. The second is Unawatuna, whose reef-sheltered bay swims calm year-round, with the lanes and ramparts of UNESCO-listed Galle Fort ten minutes away for the days when you want boutiques, museums and courtyard cafés with your coastline. Between them: Weligama's beginner surf, secret coves, turtle hatcheries and the most photogenic fishing harbours on the island.
December to April is the dry-season prime here; from May to September this itinerary flips to the east coast's Trincomalee and Pasikudah, and the planner can rebuild it there in one click.

Day 1
Arrive, expressway south to Mirissa

Blue whales at dawn
Out to the continental shelf at first light for blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins (Nov–Apr), then a hammock afternoon recovering.

Day 3
Learn to surf at Weligama
The long sandy bay next door is the island's best beginner break — lessons from $15. Afternoon at the Matara coast forts and Polhena's reef pool.

Day 4
Along the coast to Unawatuna
Beach-hop west past the stilt fishermen and turtle hatcheries to Unawatuna's calm bay. Snorkel straight off the sand at Jungle Beach.

Galle Fort day
Ten minutes to the great Dutch fort: ramparts walk at golden hour, lighthouse, museums, boutiques and long courtyard lunches.

Day 6
Bay day, your way
Diving or snorkelling in the morning, a jungle-temple walk over the headland, massage and seafood grill by lantern light.

Bentota lagoon, then home
Break the airport run at the Bentota strip: a lagoon boat safari among mangroves and monitor lizards, a last golden swim, then the expressway north.

Which coast of Sri Lanka is best for a beach holiday?
It depends on the month: the south and west coasts (this itinerary) are in their dry season December to April, while the east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay — takes over from May to September. One coast is always in season.
When can you see whales in Mirissa?
November to April, with December to March the peak — sighting rates for blue and sperm whales run above 90%. Boats leave around 6:30am and return by noon.
Is a week on the beaches enough, or should I add inland stops?
A week suits a pure unwind. If you want a taste of the interior, the planner can trade the Bentota day for an overnight Yala safari or a Galle-to-Ella hill-country add-on.
