Sri Lanka Hill Country & Tea Train Tour

The hill country is Sri Lanka concentrated: mountains quilted in tea to the horizon, waterfalls dropping through cloud forest, colonial hill stations where log fires still burn at night — and running through all of it, the slow blue train that has become the most famous railway ride in the world. This five-day tour is built around doing the hills properly rather than rushing through on the way to the coast.

It starts in Kandy with the temple and the botanic gardens, then climbs by rail into the high estates around Nuwara Eliya, where you sleep in a planter's bungalow and learn why 'high grown' means something at a working tea factory. The centrepiece is a dawn walk across Horton Plains to World's End — a kilometre of empty air off the plateau's edge — followed by the celebrated train stretch to Ella, ridden in the afternoon light. Two Ella days close the trip: Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, Nine Arch Bridge as the train steams across, waterfalls, and the best café scene in the mountains.

   Day 1

   Kandy, gateway to the hills

   Arrive via Pinnawala's elephants if timing allows. The Temple of the Tooth at evening puja and dinner overlooking the lake.

   Day 2

   By rail into the tea

   Morning at Peradeniya's botanic gardens, then the train to Nanu Oya — the landscape turning from jungle to tea with every switchback. Night in a planter's bungalow.

   Day 3

   Horton Plains and World's End

   Pre-dawn start for the plateau: sambar deer in the mist, dwarf cloud forest, and the sheer kilometre drop at World's End before the clouds roll in. Afternoon tea-factory tour.

   The famous stretch to Ella

   The Nanu Oya–Ella train in the soft afternoon light — the ride everyone comes for. Evening among Ella's cafés with the gap glowing below.

   Ella's peaks and falls

   Sunrise on Little Adam's Peak, the mid-morning train crossing at Nine Arch Bridge, a swim under Rawana Falls — then onward down the mountain or back to Kandy.
