Sri Lanka East Coast Tour
The summer-season side of the island: Trincomalee's bays, Nilaveli's white sand and Arugam Bay's world-class surf.
From May to September, while monsoon clouds queue up over Colombo, the other side of Sri Lanka is flat calm under blue sky. The east coast is the island's summer secret: whiter sand than the south, warmer and clearer water, and a fraction of the crowds — plus one of the world's great surf points at Arugam Bay. This seven-day east-coast tour is the itinerary for exactly the months when the classic southern routes are at their wettest.
It opens in Trincomalee, the deep-water port the great powers fought over for four centuries, with its clifftop Koneswaram temple and resident colony of spinner dolphins. Nilaveli and Uppuveli supply the postcard days: powder-white beaches, snorkelling at Pigeon Island's reef among blacktip reef sharks and turtles, and whale watching in season. The route then cuts south through rice country to Arugam Bay, the laid-back surf town where the right-hand point break draws riders from everywhere — with beginner-friendly bays, lagoon safaris and wild-elephant sightings on the beach road thrown in.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Trincomalee
Cross the island to the great natural harbour (5–6 hours from the airport, or fly). Sunset from Koneswaram temple on its cliff.

Day 2
Uppuveli and the dolphins
Dawn boat for spinner dolphins — pods hundreds strong — then a beach day on Uppuveli's long curve with the hot springs of Kanniya nearby.

Day 3
Pigeon Island reef day
Snorkel the national-park reef off Nilaveli: blacktip reef sharks, turtles and coral gardens in two metres of glass-clear water.

Day 4
South through Batticaloa
Down the lagoon coast to Batticaloa — the singing fish lagoon, the old Dutch fort and kallady bridges — a slice of the unhurried Tamil east.

Day 5
Arugam Bay, surf check
On to the island's surf capital. Beginners paddle out at Whiskey Point; everyone gathers at Main Point at sunset to watch the sets peel.

Day 6
Surf morning, safari evening
Dawn session at the point, then an evening jeep to the lagoons and the elephant-walked beach road towards Kumana bird sanctuary.

Last waves and away
One more sunrise in the lineup, king coconut on the sand, then the road back west — via the Cultural Triangle if you're extending.
