Sri Lanka packs an entire continent's worth of travel into an island you can cross in a day: surf coasts, 2,000-metre peaks, leopard country and ancient cities, all connected by trains and buses that cost less than a coffee back home. Thirty dollars a day buys a hostel dorm bed, three delicious local meals and your transport — spend forty and you are living well.
The classic loop runs south from Colombo along the surf beaches, up through Ella's hiking-and-hostel scene on the famous train, and out east to Arugam Bay when the swell arrives. Local buses go literally everywhere for pennies, the hostel network is sociable and fast-growing, and rice-and-curry lunch buffets will ruin every other country's budget food for you.

From roughly November to April the south coast fires: Weligama's sandy bay is arguably the best place anywhere to learn, while Midigama, Kabalana, and Hiriketiya serve up progressively punchier reef and point waves. From May to September the swell window shifts east to Arugam Bay, whose long right-hand point at Main Point is the island's most famous wave, flanked by beginner-friendly peaks at Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm. From December to April the south and west coasts shine: golden crescents like Mirissa and Unawatuna, the long resort sands of Bentota, and the quiet coves around Tangalle enjoy calm seas and blue skies. From May to September the action flips to the east, where Nilaveli's powder-white sand, Pasikuda's shallow reef-sheltered bay, and Arugam Bay's surf come into their own. Whichever month you travel, roughly half the island's coastline is in season, so pick your beach by the calendar and you will rarely be disappointed.

Centred on Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, the highlands reward slow travel — ride the famous blue train between Kandy and Ella, hike to World's End at dawn, and finish the day with a factory-fresh cup of Ceylon tea. December to April brings the clearest mountain views, but the hills are green and walkable year-round.
