You do not need a resort budget to give children a spectacular Sri Lanka trip — the cheapest options here are usually the most fun. Second-class train tickets through the tea country cost a couple of dollars and beat any theme-park ride; beaches like Polhena, with its reef-sheltered natural pool, are free; and a filling rice-and-curry lunch for the whole family costs less than one resort cocktail. Sri Lanka's beaches split neatly across two seasons. From December to April the south and west coasts shine: golden crescents like Mirissa and Unawatuna, the long resort sands of Bentota, and the quiet coves around Tangalle enjoy calm seas and blue skies. From May to September the action flips to the east, where Nilaveli's powder-white sand, Pasikuda's shallow reef-sheltered bay, and Arugam Bay's surf come into their own.
