Few places pack so much sacred ground into so small an island. Buddhists have walked to Anuradhapura's Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a cutting of the very tree the Buddha sat beneath — for more than two millennia, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy remains the beating heart of Sinhalese Buddhism. Hindu devotion burns just as brightly at Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in Jaffna, clifftop Koneswaram in Trincomalee and the island shrines of Nainativu, while Catholics gather in their tens of thousands at St. Anne's in Talawila and Our Lady of Madhu.
Then there is Adam's Peak, where Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims all climb the same 5,500 lamplit steps to a single footprint-shaped hollow — the season runs December to May. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove shoes and hats at every shrine, and try to be near a temple on a full-moon poya day, when the courtyards fill with white-clad devotees and oil lamps.

When is the Adam's Peak pilgrimage season?
The season runs from the December full moon to Vesak in May, when the 5,500-step staircase is lit through the night and tea shops line the route. Most pilgrims start around 2am to reach the summit for sunrise; outside the season the path is unlit and often clouded in.
What should I wear to visit temples in Sri Lanka?
Cover your shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats before entering shrine areas, and never pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue. White clothing is the traditional pilgrim colour and always well received, and a sarong makes an easy cover-up at the gate.
Can non-Buddhists visit the Temple of the Tooth?
Yes — visitors of all faiths are welcome at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, as at almost every temple, kovil and shrine on the island. Time your visit for a puja (usually dawn, morning and evening) to see the relic chamber opened to drumming and offerings.
