Time your trip to the drums

Tusked elephants in embroidered cloaks, streets glowing with a million Vesak lanterns, sweet rice bubbling over at Thai Pongal — travel on the festival calendar and Sri Lanka shows you its beating heart.

Sri Lanka's calendar is crowded with celebration: four religions share the island, every full moon — poya — is a public holiday, and somewhere, most months, drummers are rehearsing. The grandest spectacle is the Kandy Esala Perahera each July or August, when tusked elephants in embroidered cloaks, whip-crackers, fire dancers and hundreds of Kandyan drummers parade the Sacred Tooth Relic through the streets over ten nights. In May, Vesak turns Colombo into a city of paper lanterns and free food stalls; January brings Thai Pongal's harvest sweets; and April's Sinhala and Tamil New Year stops the whole country for games, firecrackers and family feasts.

Festival travel needs planning. Kandy rooms for the Perahera sell out months ahead and reserved seats are worth every rupee, while Nallur's 25-day festival fills Jaffna through August. Remember that alcohol is not sold on poya days — a small price for seeing the island at its most alive.

斯里兰卡最引人注目的寺庙

Sri Lanka has been a centre of Theravada Buddhism for over two thousand years, and its temples range from cave sanctuaries painted floor-to-ceiling with murals to colossal white dagobas that were among the tallest structures of the ancient world. The island's Hindu heritage adds towering, technicolour kovils in the north and east, while multi-faith shrines like Kataragama draw Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim pilgrims alike. From the Temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy to the clifftop Koneswaram in Trincomalee, these are living places of worship: dress modestly, remove shoes and hats, and visit during a puja if you can.

斯里兰卡全部 8 个联合国教科文组织世界遗产

For an island of its size, Sri Lanka punches remarkably far above its weight with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites: six cultural and two natural. Five of the cultural sites trace the arc of Sinhalese civilisation, from the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa through the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the painted caves of Dambulla to the royal city of Kandy, while Galle preserves the finest Dutch colonial fort in Asia. The natural listings protect the rainforest of Sinharaja and the misty montane forests of the Central Highlands. Remarkably, most travellers can visit six of the eight on a standard two-week loop.

文化三角:斯里兰卡十大古代奇观

Between Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy lies Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle — a plain of ancient capitals, colossal stupas and rock fortresses that ruled the island for over two thousand years. In a compact area you can climb Sigiriya's lion-guarded summit, walk the monastic cities where Buddhism first took root, and stand before Gal Vihara's serene granite Buddhas. Most travellers base themselves in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana and cover the triangle in two to four days; every site below is UNESCO-listed or a short drive from one that is.

好问题

When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?

Over ten nights ending on the Esala full moon, usually late July into early August — exact dates follow the lunar calendar and are announced by the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. The final two nights, the Randoli Perahera, are the grandest.

What happens during Vesak in Sri Lanka?

On the May full moon, Buddhists mark the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. Cities fill with paper lanterns, illuminated pandals and dansal — stalls giving away free food and drink. Colombo around Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake is spectacular after dark.

Can you buy alcohol on poya days in Sri Lanka?

No — sales are banned on every full-moon (poya) day, including in most hotel bars, and the rule is taken especially seriously at Vesak. Plan a dry day or buy ahead; some resorts serve residents discreetly, but never count on it.
